Angela, thanks for your comments. I agree that it isn't fair that society is tougher on women who ask and assume that women will accept less so people offer them less. And I certainly don't want to blame women for this -- blame clearly rests on society's shoulders. I hope that our book will try to change this and for people to recognize when they are treating women unfairly and try to change their behavior. But this is a long-run solution because society takes a long time to change the way it socializes people to behave towards women. We offer women suggestions for them to try to help themselves by making changes in the short run. But this shouldn't be interpreted as blaming women for society's unfair treatment towards them.

By the way, an alternative to asking someone about what they earn is that you can ask a peer how much they think you should earn. This is a bit less socially awkward but can still get you the information you want.
